Arena Programs

Public Skating

Public skating is open to everyone on Saturday afternoons from 12:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.  Drop by the Thorold Community Arena with your family and friends to enjoy a leisurely skate on the Frank Doherty ice pad.  Please note that sticks and pucks are not permitted on the ice during public skating sessions.

Public skating admission is $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for students (cash only).  Cancellations of public skating may occur due to arena maintenance, holidays or special events.  Advanced notice of cancellations will be posted at the arena and on the Community Events Calendar whenever possible.

Adult Skate

Adult Skate is a non-supervised skating program available to participants 18+ years, looking for a quieter skate.  This skating session may be used for leisure or for fitness purposes.  Please note that sticks and pucks are not permitted on the ice during adult skating sessions.

Adult skate times are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Jack Whyte arena.

Admission to this program is by season pass only for $25.00 per person.  Passes may be purchased at City Hall or the Arena Office with a completed Adult Skate Pass Form, payment and identification.  Cancellations of the Adult Skate may occur due to arena maintenance, holidays or special events.  Advanced notice of cancellations will be posted at the arena and on the Community Events Calendar.

Senior Skate

Senior Skate is available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for patrons 55+ years in the Frank Doherty arena.  This is a leisurely session for seniors to socialize, enjoy the ice and share a coffee afterward.  Admission to this program is by pass only for $20.00 per person.  Passes may be purchased at City Hall or the Arena Office.  Cancellations of the Senior Skate may occur due to arena maintenance, holidays or special events.  Advanced notice of cancellations will be posted at the arena and on the Community Events Calendar.

Tiny Tots Skate

Tiny Tots Skate is available to pre-school aged children and their parents or guardians.  The tiny tots skate time provides young children with the opportunity to learn to skate in a quiet environment free from distractions.

This free program runs Mondays from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.  Cancellations of the Tiny Tots Skate may occur due to arena maintenance, holidays or special events.  Advanced notice of cancellations will be posted at the arena and on the Community Events Calendar.

Stick and Puck

Stick and Puck is a great opportunity for children and an adult to practice developing hockey skills.  Nets are available on ice and children are encouraged to practice their stick handling skills in a non-competitive setting.  Direct adult supervision (18+) is required at all times with a maximum of 2 children per adult.  The cost to participate during stick and puck ice time is $5.00 for one adult and two children (cash only).

Children are required to wear skates, gloves and a CSA approved helmet.  Adults are required to wear skates and gloves.  Slapshots and organized games or practices are strictly prohibited.  Failure to abide by the rules may result in ejection from the program or program cancellation.

Cancellations of stick and puck may occur due to arena maintenance, holidays or special events.  Advanced notice of cancellations will be posted at the arena and on the Community Events Calendar.

General arena rules

  • All on-ice participants must wear skates
  • Food and drinks are not permitted on the ice surface
  • Skate at a sensible speed and in the direction indicated by the on-ice skate patrol
  • No throwing ice or snow
  • No horseplay, games of tag or racing, backwards skating or figure skating manoeuvres

The City of Thorold strongly recommends that all participants wear a CSA approved hockey helmet when participating in ice sports and activities.
